How to compare your Dashboard numbers with earlier periods

4 min read

The number cards on the Dashboard that measure a period compare it with the period right before it. Tick Compare with last year to also see the same days a year earlier, which helps you tell a change in your store from a change in your season.

You will learn #

  • How to pick the period the cards show
  • What the colored change under each number compares
  • How to add the comparison with the same days last year
  • Which cards don’t compare with the period before

Before you begin #

  • The comparison with last year needs a year of history. A card shows its last-year line only when your sales history reaches back to the same days last year. On a younger store, the line appears once it does.

Choose the period #

  1. In your WordPress admin, open Tendlio → Dashboard.
  2. Above the number cards, click 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. Each time you open the Dashboard from the menu, it starts at 30 days.

The period is the last 7, 30 or 90 finished days, ending yesterday. Today joins once it’s over, so a day that’s only half done can’t drag your numbers down.

The same period buttons appear again over Trends, lower on the page, and either set changes the number cards and the Trends charts together. Your scores don’t depend on the period, so they stay the same.

Read the change under each number #

  • Under each number, an arrow and a percentage show the change from the previous period of the same length. With 30 days picked, that’s the 30 days before them. Hover over the change to see what it’s compared with.
  • Green means the number moved the way you’d want it to, and red means it moved the other way. On cards where lower is better, such as Refunded, a drop shows in green. The arrow always shows which way the number went.
  • A change that shows as 0.0% has no arrow.
  • Click a card to open the report behind its number.

Add the same days last year #

  1. Tick Compare with last year, next to the period buttons.
  2. Cards with a year of history, and sales in the same days last year, now show a second line, for example “vs the same 30 days last year: +7.1%”. Tendlio compares with the same days 52 weeks earlier, so a Saturday is compared with a Saturday.
  3. To hide those lines again, untick the box.

This browser remembers your choice, so the lines stay on until you untick the box. In another browser, the box starts unticked.

Some cards never show a last-year line, and their ? says so. Est. gross profit is one of them. It uses one average margin for both years, so a last-year line on it would almost exactly repeat the one on Revenue.

The Revenue chart under Trends always shows both comparisons side by side, whether or not the box is ticked. It needs less history than the cards: the line for last year appears once there are sales on a few of the same days last year.

Why compare with last year #

If your store has a season, the previous period can mislead you. For a party shop, September after a busy August can read red every year, and December can read green. The same days last year tell you whether this September is better than last September.

Cards that don’t compare with the period before #

  • Inventory value, Dead stock value and Out now and losing sales show your stock as of your last analysis, not over the period you picked, and their ? says which analysis. Inventory value compares with your previous analysis instead, because WooCommerce keeps no history of what your stock was worth. The other two show no change.
  • At-risk customers counts the customers in that group as of your last analysis, with no change.
  • Returned abandoned-checkout value shows the value for the period you picked, with no change.

Additional resources #

  • How to choose and arrange your Dashboard cards: show, hide and move the number cards.
  • How and when to re-scan your store: when the stock cards get new numbers.
  • Understanding your scores: the two scores above the cards.

Frequently asked questions #

Why doesn't today count in the numbers? #

The period ends yesterday, so a day that's only half over doesn't make it look like sales dropped. Today joins once it's finished.

Why does a card have no last-year line? #

Your sales history doesn't reach back to the same days last year yet, there were no sales in those days last year, or the card doesn't compare with last year at all, like Est. gross profit or the stock cards.

Can I set a custom date range? #

Not on the Dashboard. It offers 7, 30 and 90 days. The reports under Reports have their own periods.
