Storefront widget positions and shortcodes

7 min read

Most Tendlio widgets place themselves on your product pages or on your cart page, in the spot you choose under Position. A few have no standard spot, so you put them on a page with a shortcode. The widgets that place themselves have a shortcode too, for when your theme or page builder skips their spot.

Widgets on your product pages #

Three rows sit on your product pages: Frequently bought together, In-stock alternatives and On-sale picks (product page). Each has a panel on Tendlio → Storefront, on the Recommendations tab, and each panel’s Position has six choices:

  • Below the product summary (recommended): a wide row after the product’s main details.
  • Just above Related products: lower on the page, right before the related products your theme or WooCommerce shows.
  • Bottom of the product page
  • Below the whole product area (works with page builders): outside the product layout, which is the part page builders replace.
  • After the Add to cart button (narrow column): next to the product image, where fewer cards fit.
  • Shortcode only (I’ll place it myself): the row shows only where you paste its shortcode.

To see where each spot is, click Preview the layout next to Position.

The shortcodes:

  • [tendlio_bought_together] for Frequently bought together
  • [tendlio_alternatives] for In-stock alternatives
  • [tendlio_on_sale_picks] for On-sale picks

Each takes three optional settings. id sets the product the row is for: leave it out on a product page, and use it to show the row somewhere else, such as a landing page. limit sets how many products the row loads, and title sets its heading. For example: [tendlio_bought_together id="123" limit="8" title="Often bought together"]. You’ll find a product’s ID in Products → All Products: hover over the product’s name, and the ID shows under it.

Widgets on your cart page #

Cart recommendations and Cart outlet picks each have a Position with three choices:

  • Below the list of cart items (recommended)
  • In the cart totals area (where cross-sells show)
  • Shortcode only (I’ll place it myself)

Their shortcodes are [tendlio_cart_recommendations] and [tendlio_outlet_cart]. Both take limit and title, for example [tendlio_cart_recommendations limit="6" title="You might also like"].

The free gift, which you set up under Free gift with an order on the Experimental page, shows on its own under the list of cart items on the classic cart. Its shortcode, [tendlio_free_gift], is for a cart page where the gift doesn’t show on its own, and it takes no settings.

These spots exist only on the classic WooCommerce cart. If your cart page uses the block Cart, each of these panels warns you once its widget is on, and you place the widgets with their shortcodes.

Widgets on a page you choose #

Four widgets have no standard spot, so they show only where you paste their shortcode, on your homepage or any other page:

  • [tendlio_recommended] for Recommended for you. Settings: limit and title.
  • [tendlio_trending] for Trending now. Settings: limit and title.
  • [tendlio_boosted] for the Boosted products row. Settings: limit, title, columns (how many cards show at once on a computer) and category (only products from one category, given by its slug, name or ID).
  • [tendlio_deals] for the Deals page (its panel is Deals / clearance page, on the Deals tab). Settings: min (the smallest discount a product needs, in percent), columns, per_batch (how many products load at a time as shoppers scroll) and sort: discount_desc puts the biggest discount first, date_desc the newest products, sales_desc the best-selling, price_asc the cheapest and price_desc the most expensive.

A setting in the shortcode applies only to the page it’s on. Everywhere else, the widget follows its panel.

Smart 404 suggestions #

Smart 404 suggestions, on the Experimental page, adds a row of products to your 404 page: in-stock products that match the broken link the shopper followed, or your popular products when nothing matches. With Add it automatically to the 404 page on, the row goes at the end of the page, which on some themes is below the footer. To put it somewhere else, turn that switch off and paste [tendlio_404_suggestions] into your 404 template. This shortcode takes no settings.

Place a widget with its shortcode #

  1. Open the widget’s panel and turn on its switch. Most panels are on Tendlio → Storefront. Smart 404 suggestions and the free gift are on the Experimental page, which shows in the Tendlio menu once Experimental features are on in Settings. On-sale picks also needs Experimental features on.
  2. If the panel has a Position, choose Shortcode only (I’ll place it myself). The panel shows the shortcode as soon as you choose it. Panels without a Position show their shortcode all the time.
  3. Save the panel: click Save settings on the Storefront page, or Save on the Experimental page.
  4. Click Copy next to the shortcode.
  5. Paste it where you want the widget:
    • In the block editor, add a Shortcode block and paste it into the block.
    • In a page builder, paste it into the builder’s shortcode element.
    • In a block theme, open the Site Editor, edit the template your product pages or your cart page use, and add a Shortcode block there.
  6. Save the page, then open it on your store to check that the widget shows.

The rows on your product pages and your cart page show once per page. If a row’s automatic spot and its shortcode are both on the same page, you see the row only once. A shortcode on a page shows nothing while the widget’s switch is off, so you can leave it there.

How Tendlio knows a widget is showing #

  • Recommended for you, Trending now, the Boosted products row and the Deals page: Tendlio counts one as placed once it finds its shortcode in a published page or post. Until then, its card on the Growth engine page reads Off, and its card on the Sales lift page reads On, not placed yet. A shortcode you place only in a theme template or a widget area still shows the widget in your shop, but Tendlio doesn’t look there, so the cards stay that way.
  • The rows on your product pages and your cart page: Tendlio watches whether the spot you chose loads on your store. If it hasn’t seen that spot load for a week, the row’s card on the Growth engine and Sales lift pages reads On, but not showing, and a note under Position names the shortcode to place.

Why widgets work this way #

WooCommerce has standard spots on product pages and on the classic cart, so the rows for those pages can place themselves there. A homepage or an ordinary page has no such spot, which is why four widgets need a shortcode. Some themes and page builders skip the standard spots too, and that’s why the rows that place themselves have a shortcode as well.

Frequently asked questions #

My theme doesn't show a Tendlio row. What do I do? #

For a row on your product pages, set its Position to Below the whole product area (works with page builders). If it still doesn't show, or if the row belongs on your cart page, choose Shortcode only (I'll place it myself) and paste the row's shortcode where you want it.

Can I put the same row on two pages with different settings? #

Yes. A setting in the shortcode, such as limit or title, applies only to the page it's on.

Does a shortcode slow my page down when the widget is off? #

The shortcode shows nothing while the widget's switch is off, and doesn't load the widget's files either.
